Orchid name / hybrid
Genus
Aliases / trade names
Growth habit
Monopodial epiphyte; leaves form a central crown and roots photosynthesize when exposed.
Light
Bright filtered light; substantially less direct sun than Brassavola.
Direct sun tolerance
Avoid hot midday/afternoon direct sun on leaves. Brief gentle filtered light may be tolerated after acclimation.
Placement in Orchidarium
Farther inward from the west screen or otherwise shaded from the terrace’s direct afternoon sun line.
Airflow
Good gentle airflow, especially around crown and roots, without a harsh hot draft.
Temperature
Warm; avoid cold stress.
Humidity
Moderate-high humidity with airflow.
Container / mount
Transparent perforated pot is useful for root inspection; mount only if watering frequency can support it.
Medium
Open bark-based mix; small lava can add aeration. Avoid a dense sphagnum core in this humid setting.
Watering method
Water thoroughly when the medium is nearing dry, then drain completely. Keep standing water out of the crown.
When to water / dryness test
Use pot weight, root/medium observation, and bamboo skewer. Do not assume green visible roots mean the center is still safe; inspect the core.
Roots
Firm green/silver roots are useful indicators; mushy/brown hollow roots are dead. Crown must stay intact and dry between wettings.
Fertilizer
Weak fertilizer during active growth; periodic plain-water flushing.
Seasonal behavior
Drying can slow markedly with cooler/cloudier weather; respond to the plant, not a weekly schedule.
Blooming
Many hybrids initiate spikes with adequate light and a modest temperature change; do not sacrifice root health to force bloom.
Arrival / root-core inspection
Mandatory in this Orchidarium: inspect the root core for sphagnum and especially sponge/foam nursery plugs; remove compact wet cores carefully.
Warnings / hazards
Crown rot, hidden wet core, poor airflow, and afternoon sunburn are primary hazards.
Notes
Transparent pots make the user’s weight/skewer method easier to validate.
Sources / basis
Genus profile based on standard Phalaenopsis epiphyte culture, adapted to the user’s experience with hidden sphagnum/sponge cores.
