Orchid name / hybrid
Genus
Aliases / trade names
Growth habit
Sympodial epiphyte with cylindrical, succulent leaves; roots want abundant air.
Light
Very bright light. In this Orchidarium, give it one of the brightest positions, but acclimate any plant that has been indoors.
Direct sun tolerance
Tolerates and often benefits from some direct sun after acclimation; favor the later filtered/angled sun rather than suddenly exposing tender leaves to the strongest beam.
Placement in Orchidarium
Near the west screen / high-airflow bright zone, positioned so foliage does not remain wet and hot against the screen.
Airflow
High. Constant gentle air movement is particularly useful in Miami humidity.
Temperature
Warm to intermediate; protect from chilling and abrupt temperature extremes.
Humidity
Moderate to high humidity is useful only with strong air movement.
Container / mount
Slatted wood basket or mount is excellent; a very open perforated pot also works.
Medium
Very coarse, fast-draining medium: large bark and/or lava; little water-retentive material. Avoid packed sphagnum around the root core.
Watering method
Water thoroughly, then allow the root zone to approach dryness. Mounted/basket plants may need water more often than potted plants because they dry rapidly.
When to water / dryness test
Use pot/basket weight, exposed-root appearance, and a bamboo skewer where applicable. Do not water merely because a calendar says so.
Roots
Thick roots need oxygen; healthy tips are a better guide than old root color. Avoid burying the rhizome.
Fertilizer
Weak fertilizer during active growth; flush periodically so salts do not accumulate.
Seasonal behavior
Water demand rises with active root/new growth and heat; reduce frequency when drying slows.
Blooming
Bright light is important for flowering; fragrant flowers are especially noticeable at night.
Arrival / root-core inspection
On arrival, remove decorative/cache material and inspect the center of the root mass for hidden sphagnum, sponge/foam plugs, or compact nursery material.
Warnings / hazards
Main risks here: staying wet too long in humid weather, insufficient air, and sudden sun exposure without acclimation.
Notes
For this terrace, prioritize air + fast drying over moisture retention.
Sources / basis
Species-level profile; cultivation principles based on standard epiphytic Brassavola culture, adapted to the user’s Miami screened terrace and observed sun path.
